KHON KAEN : A train transporting 50 soldiers and about 20 military vehicles has been blocked from leaving the railway station here by 500 red shirt protesters.

The protesters believed the soldiers and vehicles were being sent to disperse red shirts gathered at Ratchaprasong intersection in Bangkok.

The red shirts in Khon Kaen were not convinced on Wednesday when they were told by the military the train was taking the soldiers to Pattani's Yarang district. They were told the troops were part of a rotation of personnel in the deep South.

The protesters placed a log and a cement pipe on the railway track to prevent the train from leaving. They camped out at the station to keep watch on any attempt to move the soldiers.

The 50 soldiers came from Mahesak Polasep army camp in Khon Kaen's Chum Phae district. They were scheduled to travel to Pattani along with the military vehicles, including Humvees and GMC military trucks, yesterday afternoon.

Puea Thai Party MP for Khon Kaen Duangkae Annopporn yesterday led another group of 500 red shirt protesters to mount a blockade in Ban Phai and Phon districts.

They stopped four coaches loaded with 195 soldiers on Mittraphap Road. The group punctured the coaches' tyres.

The soldiers said they were headed to the lower South. They had come from Prachak Silapakom army camp in Udon Thani.
