Members of the yellow-shirt group rallied in front of army bases in Bangkok and other provinces on Thursday, demanding the military and the government take decisive action against the red-shirt protesters and put an end to terrorism and anarchy.
People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) leaders Chamlong Srimuang and Pibhop Dhongchai led yellow-shirt supporters to the 11th Infantry Regiment in Bang Khen, where they submitted petitions to Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and army chief Anupong Paojinda through their representatives. The strongly pro-monarchy PAD gained infamy for its week-long occupation of Bangkok's airports in 2008.They demanded authorities to explain clearly their plans to handle the red-shirt group, to strictly enforce against protesters who have broken the law, and to use its power to end the terrorism and anarchy in the capital."The crisis has reached a critical point and has damaged the economy and society. We would like to see the brave soldiers help us get rid of this illegal activity and bring peace to Thai society as soon as possible," said the petition.Yellow-shirts rallied at 40 military bases in provinces nationwide, reading out similar statements and delivering similar letters to base commanders, according to PAD spokesman Suriyasai Katasila
In brief, the statement asked the government and the armed forces to;1) Immediately declare martial law in all necessary areas2) Suppress the red-shirt protesters who violate the law3) Send troops to destroy places, equipment and groups of people who are a threat to national security, and4) Introduce major reform in the country and suppress all terrorist groups before dissolving the House of Representatives and organising a general electionThe United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD), in turn, submitted a petition to the European Union calling for it to send representatives to observe the demonstration by the red shirts and the government's actions against them."The government used force to crack down on innocent protesters, and it's likely there will be further violent crackdowns," a UDD leader Jaran Dithapichai said on the Ratchaprasong stage.Four UDD representatives, led by academic Cherdchai Tantisirin handed in the petition at the EU office in Kian Nguan building on Witthayu Road, a street adjoining their rally camp. The letter, addressed to EU ambassador David Lipman, was written by UDD leader Veera Musikhapong. It asked the EU to look into the government's use of force against the protesters on April 10, when clashes between government forces and the red-shirts left 20 civilians and five soldiers dead and more than 800 other people injured."As a respected international organisation, we appeal to you to assign representatives to monitor the government's actions," the letter said. "Faced with the threat of tanks and impending bloodshed, we are appealing for your help in averting a human rights catastrophe." The EU's Bangkok office later issued a statement by Mr Lipman expressing grave concern over the situation in Thailand and calling for the two sides in conflict to negotiate and to solve the political crisis through peaceful and democratic means.
