Man suspected of killing police surrenders

A man suspected of shooting dead two police officers in Ratchaburi at the weekend has given himself up to the local police chief.

Vijai Nakwan, 34, turned himself in yesterday because he feared being killed by police after allegedly shooting dead their colleagues, officers said.

The suspect's mother and sister escorted him to Ratchaburi police chief Petcharat Saengchai.

Mr Vijai is alleged to have shot dead Pol Sgt Somreuk Uthaireuk and Pol Snr Sgt Maj Thanee Buaphan on Sunday afternoon after they ordered him to pull over his car at an intersection in Pak Tho district.

Police said Mr Vijai decided to shoot Pol Sgt Somreuk when he saw the officer holding a gun and trying to open his car door.

He said he killed Pol Snr Sgt Maj Thanee, who was armed and approaching the car, for the same reason.

Mr Vijai is alleged to have escaped from Ratchaburi police on Sunday morning after they allegedly found 10,800 speed pills, 600 grammes of the drug "ice" and two guns in his pickup truck.
